In the field of Philippine construction, there is a constant, quiet battle waged between two major architectural performance metrics: breathability and durability. For decades, the local industry has prioritized absolute durability above all else, interpreting the word to mean a wall finish that is completely waterproof, scrubbable, and impervious to external forces. This mindset led directly to the widespread adoption of heavy-duty acrylic paints and elastomeric coatings across the country. However, this definition of durability is deeply flawed because it ignores the fundamental physics of the concrete and masonry substrates that form the bones of our homes.
Almost all residential structures in the Philippines are built using concrete hollow blocks, structural concrete columns, and sand-cement plaster renders. These materials are inherently porous and highly hygroscopic, meaning they naturally absorb and release moisture from the surrounding environment.
