Living Walls: Why Limewash is the Antidote to "Plastic" Synthetic Paints
Walk into almost any modern home or condominium unit in Metro Manila, Bonifacio Global City, or the surrounding suburbs, and you will likely find yourself surrounded by walls wrapped entirely in plastic. Standard acrylic latex paints—which dominate the Philippine construction market—are essentially liquid plastics. Once applied to a masonry surface, they cure into a non-porous, elastomeric film that seals the wall completely. While the local construction industry has long championed these synthetic coatings for their scrubbability and uniform color consistency, they come with a hidden, severe cost to both indoor air quality and structural longevity, especially in our tropical climate.
Limewash offers a radically different paradigm. Rather than creating a suffocating synthetic skin over your home, authentic limewash is a living, mineral-based finish made from slaked lime (calcium hydroxide) and natural pigments. When applied to a porous substrate, it doesn't just sit on top of the surface like a plastic wrap; it penetrates the masonry, undergoing a chemical process called carbonation as it cures. It absorbs carbon dioxide from the surrounding air and transforms back into solid limestone.
